Savitri, the beautiful and learned daughter of a king, came of age with many princes seeking her hand in marriage, but none met her father's approval. Determined to find her own match, she chose Satyavan, the son of an exiled king, despite a prophecy that he had only a year to live. Unwavering, Savitri married Satyavan, and they lived in the forest as hermits. Her devotion to her husband was unparalleled. When Yama, the God of Death, came to claim Satyavan on the fated day, Savitri fearlessly refused to be separated from him. Moved by her devotion, Yama granted Satyavan's life. Traditionally, on the full moon day in June, married women honor Savitri by praying for their husbands' wellbeing.
