Amar Chitra Katha Vol. 535 Mirabai Hindi
Kamala Chandrakant
Age (years) : 6 - 99
Mira, a princess from a small kingdom in Rajasthan, was devoted to Krishna from a very young age. Despite being married into the royal house of Chittor, where the family deity was goddess Durga, she continued to worship and sing of Krishna. Her songs of devotion to Krishna gained immense popularity, and she came to be revered as a saint. Mira proclaimed herself to be married to Krishna, transcending the conventional norms.
When her husband, the king, passed away, she refused to follow the practice of 'sati' – the tradition of a wife immolating herself on her husband's funeral pyre. She faced numerous tribulations but courageously confronted them all. In the end, she departed as she had wished, singing of Krishna.
Mira's 'bhajans' (devotional songs) are cherished and sung all over India by both the masses and masters of classical music, leaving an enduring legacy of devotion and spiritual inspiration.
