No one knows when Sai Baba was born, who his parents were, or what his real name was. In 1872, he arrived in Shirdi, Maharashtra. He dressed like a faqir (Muslim ascetic) and lived in a dilapidated mosque, but he spoke like a Hindu guru, whom he referred to as Venkusa. He was well-versed in Hindu scriptures but also quoted from the Quran.
The word "Sai" is a Persian term meaning "saint," and "Baba" is a Hindi word meaning "father." As suggested by his name, Sai Baba had both Hindu and Muslim disciples. He rejected conversion and believed that everyone had the right to follow their chosen path to God. However, whatever is known about his beliefs pales in comparison to his actions. He wasn't given to doctrines; instead, his life was his teaching.
Sai Baba passed away in 1918. Even during his lifetime, he gained fame, and after his death, Shirdi, where he lived for nearly half a century, became a pilgrimage site where hundreds of devotees gather every year.
This Amar Chitra Katha is based on the accounts of Sai Baba's devotees.
