The death of Harsha, the King of Kanauj, around 647 A.D., marked the collapse of his great empire in North India, leading to its disintegration into numerous petty kingdoms. The political division weakened the unity of the country and created a fertile ground for violent disputes among the chieftains of these new kingdoms. Taking advantage of India's disunity, foreign invaders began to exploit the situation.
In the 12th century, the Afghan Chief Shahabuddin Ghori, also known as Mohammad of Ghor, conquered the empire of Mahmud of Ghazni and became the ruler of Ghazni. His incursions into India began with the capture of Lahore, and he subsequently marched towards Delhi, which was then under the rule of the valiant Rajput king, Prithviraj Chauhan. In the battle of Tarain, Prithviraj Chauhan emerged victorious against Mohammad.
However, the following year, Mohammad returned to India and faced Prithviraj Chauhan's forces again on the same battlefield. This time, the Muslim invader inflicted a crushing defeat on the Hindu army. This second battle proved to be a significant turning point in Indian history, as it marked the end of the Hindu Empire in Northern India and the establishment of Muslim rule.
Prithviraj Chauhan, renowned for his valour and chivalry, was a famous king and warrior. Despite his defeat and death, his name has been immortalized, becoming the hero of numerous legends.
