Hitopadesha is a collection of stories from the 11th and 12th centuries, based on the Panchatantra. The stories are divided into four chapters and are designed to provide advice on ethical and practical conduct. The characters in the stories include humans and animals, with the latter possessing human-like reasoning and emotions. The stories illustrate different types of human behavior and provide moral lessons. For example, one story follows the journey of a farmer's bag of coins, which travels through various hands before returning to the farmer. The moral lesson is that what is rightfully yours will not be lost. Another story tells of a traveler who rescues a lion, monkey, and snake from a well, as well as a goldsmith who had fallen in. The grateful animals later come to the traveler's aid when he is attacked by robbers, but the ungrateful goldsmith lands him in prison. Ultimately, the goldsmith is punished, and the moral lesson is that evil acts bring evil returns.
