In another story, Akbar asks his courtiers how to detect a thief. One of them suggests that they should look for someone with a guilty face, while another says they should look for someone with a guilty heart. Birbal suggests that they should give everyone a handful of lentils to hold in their hand and come back the next day. The one who has stolen a lentil will be the one with one less lentil the next day. Akbar agrees to this plan, and the next day, Birbal catches the thief who had one less lentil.

In a third story, a man comes to Akbar's court claiming that he can make anyone speak the truth. Akbar is intrigued and asks Birbal to test the man's claim. Birbal tells the man to make him lie. The man thinks for a moment and then says, "You are not holding an elephant in your hand." Birbal cannot deny this truth, and the man proves his claim.

In the fourth story, Akbar decides to test Birbal's intelligence by asking him to complete a task. Akbar gives Birbal a piece of cloth and asks him to make a coat out of it. Birbal cuts the cloth into several pieces and sews them back together to make a coat. When Akbar asks why he did that, Birbal explains that he used all the cloth that was given to him, just as he uses all his intelligence and resources to complete a task.
