Bagha Jatin or 'Jatin the Tiger', one of the great Indian revolutionaries, was born in 1879 in Bengal. After years of British rule, the great Revolt of 1857 ignited the first flames of independence in India. Although the British tried to suppress it ruthlessly, the spirit of mutiny could not be destroyed. In the early 20th century, a revival of this invincible spirit of freedom was seen in the activities of revolutionaries who drew inspiration from Sri Aurobindo - the 'Prophet of Indian Nationalism'. They conducted their activities in strict secrecy, which is why very little is known about their lives. Jatin Mukherji belonged to this group of revolutionaries who sacrificed their lives for India's freedom. He was one of the noblest martyrs of our time. In recounting this story, we have been particularly helped, among other sources, by The Saga of Bagha Jatin by Manoj Das, serialised in The Illustrated Weekly of India in 1971.
