In Custody by Anita Desai
A Powerful Story of Lost Ideals and Fading Culture
When Deven, a small-town Hindi lecturer, gets the rare chance to interview Nur—the greatest living Urdu poet—he believes his life is about to change. But instead of a literary giant, he finds a frail old man surrounded by chaos, conflict, and opportunism. Caught between dreams and disillusionment, Deven becomes the reluctant guardian of a dying language and culture.
Anita Desai’s In Custody is a profound reflection on identity, tradition, and the loneliness of intellectual pursuit in modern India. Quietly moving and darkly humorous, it’s a timeless classic from one of India’s most celebrated authors.
